New Store Hours

Effective this week, we are changing our store hours to be closed on Sundays.Our drive thru is open from 9:30 am – 9:30 pm and our lobby is open for carry-out rom 11:00 am – 8:00 pm, Monday – Saturday. The current COVID-19 situation (among other factors) has led us to a time of great reflection on our business, our lives, and how best to proceed. After almost twelve years of 7 days/week business, we have decided that closing one day per week will allow our employees a much needed, consistent day off to be with family. This decision was made with valued input from our staff and families, and it did not come easily as it represents a huge shift in our business model – but we feel that it is shift for the positive!

We have mapped out certain Sundays that we DO plan to be open.

-Fourth of July Weekend

-Labor Day Weekend

– Also any major, ticketed event at Barber Motorsports Park (NTT INDYCAR SERIES , MotoAmerica, Barber Vintage Fest, etc.)

Independence Day


The time has come! This coming three-day weekend is America’s big birthday celebration. Chances are, you’ll be gathering with friends or your family to have a great time. We are here to help you feed all those people.

We’ll be OPEN ALL DAY ON JULY 4th. Rain or shine, we can provide your traditional Independence Day meal. Order pulled pork or chicken by the pound, or ribs by the slab. Our whole pies are great to take to a potluck – please order in advance.



Place your to-go orders early and give yourself more time to enjoy the weekend.




Memorial Day and the Best Bar-B-Q Sandwich in Alabama


It’s Memorial Day weekend, and in the South, that means it is time for Bar-B-Q!

Just in time for the season, Al.com has decided to launch a search for the best bar-b-q pork sandwich in Alabama. They first opened up comments on an announcement post, and counted the frequency of mentions of various bar-b-q spots. The task was daunting, so they broke it up into regions and allowed voting for the best in each area. Writers from Alabama Media Group have been dispatched to the top restaurants in each area to learn more about the delicious pork sandwiches their fans rave about in each place.

We are humbled that the readers of Al.com count our pork sandwich among the best in the land. We are pleased to announce that AL.com put together this slide show article to talk more about Rusty’s Bar-B-Q. This will allow folks who may not have met us yet to have the chance to know a little bit more about our food and our family.

Speaking of family, if you’re feeding a crowd this long weekend, please give us a call to get your take-out order ready. You can order our famous pulled pork or chicken by the pound. Take it with you to enjoy at the lake or the pool. Our menu can be found here.

Finally, while we all enjoy our Bar-B-Q, we pause to think about the reason for Memorial Day itself. With gratitude, we remember all those who have lost their lives fighting on our country’s behalf. We do not take our freedoms lightly.

Bacon Explosion


First, I have to start by saying that this is not an original recipe. (Best I can tell, This is the original recipe.) However, it is a recipe worth sharing time and time again. I first learned of this genius culinary creation in 2013 when a friend shared it on Facebook. While intrigued, I logged the idea in my mind, and had all but dismissed it from my thoughts completely until the 2015 Atlanta Food & Wine Festival when Restaurateur and Top Chef Kevin Gillespie made it for a live demonstration. He made it look so simple – how could I not try to make it on my own? Chef Kevin made it look so delicious that I was emboldened to come back to the Rusty’s Bar-B-Q kitchen and give it a try.



Start by gathering all of your ingredients together. You will need:


2 lbs of bacon

2 lbs of sausage (I prefer hot breakfast sausage or Italian )

1 lb of shredded cheese blend (jack and cheddar work well)

6 fresh jalapenos, roasted, seeded, and sliced

1/2 lb chopped Bar-B-Q pork (from your favorite locally owned and operated Bar-B-Q joint)



Start by chopping half of the bacon, and put it in a skillet over low heat to render (like this!). 20150607_164639

While the bacon is rendering, lay out two sheets of heavy duty aluminum foil. Now you want to weave a bacon mat. That is just what it sounds like: a layer of solid bacon, intertwined in a porky, greasy, goodness. Here is a brilliant trick of the trade to make this bacon mat more uniform: use a rolling pin to flatten the bacon slightly once it is all put together.

Next, layer your sausage onto the bacon mat, leaving about an inch all around. 20150607_164648

Next, pile on the cheese…

Finally, you are ready to roll. Remember those layers of foil you put down? Here’s where they come in handy. Once you roll your Bacon Monstrosity, you want to wrap the whole thing in two tight layers of foil. This will hold everything together while you cook it. (Cooking not pictured, sorry…) Put everything on the Bar-B-Q pit, or if you’re playing along at home, on the grill, or in the smoker. Apply heat to meat. Once the internal temperature reaches 155 degrees, unwrap this porky goodness.   20150608_120744

Glaze with your favorite Bar-B-Q sauce. In this case, I like a blend of Rusty’s Bar-B-Q Spicy and Sweet Sauces. 20150608_121838

I used the oven for this part, because it’s easier to control the temperature than on a pit. The goal at this point is to create a nice glaze. 20150608_133621


Now for the hard part. Please, wait at least 30 minutes for all of that molten cheese and bacon fat to settle down before you actually slice this thing. Use a long serrated knife to slice. Chef Kevin serves his sliced thinly on a big cat-head buttermilk biscuit. We served it at the restaurant as either a Bacon Explosion, Lettuce, and Tomato Sandwich, or as a Bacon Explosion Burger! Because there wasn’t enough meat in it on its own. 🙂

2016 Winter Restaurant Week Wrap-up

Rusty’s Bar-B-Q wrapped up Birmingham’s inaugural Winter Restaurant Week with a bang! We loved having all of our loyal customers and some new friends stop by for our delicious specials.

Along the way, we were fortunate to get some terrific press for the event.

Her piece on Winter Restaurant Week, or, as you may recognize its hashtag, #WRW2016, appeared on the I Love Alabama FoodAlabama Food Blog” here. Rusty is honored that she called him a “true master.”

Al.com included us in their coverage of Winter Restaurant Week. As you can see, we were among a very distinguished group of local establishments.

Finally, we loved all the great feedback we got for our desserts. We made a red velvet cake to get folks thinking about Valentine’s Day and to show off this amazing frosting.

It’s almost here!

Birmingham Restaurant Week’s first-ever Winter Restaurant Week will be held January 25-31.

We are so excited to be a part of this event. Restaurant Week not only supports local small businesses in the Birmingham area, but is also an excuse to eat some amazing food at fantastic prices.

Like Birmingham Restaurant Week (held in August), Winter Restaurant Week features prix fixe menus at some of the best eateries in the Greater Birmingham Area.

Rusty’s will feature the following:

$15 Lunch Sampler for One – Includes 2 ribs, pulled pork, and 1/4 chicken (dark meat) with choice of two sides and a choice of dessert. Served from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM.

$30 Dinner Sampler for Two – Includes 4 ribs, pulled pork, 1/4 chicken (dark meat), smoked turkey, and smoked sausage with a choice of two large sides and choice of two desserts. Served from 5:00 PM until Close.

The Year of Alabama Bar-B-Q

Rusty’s Bar-B-Q Voted Best Mom & Pop Bar-B-Q in Statewide Competition!

A solid month of campaigning has (finally) come to an end and all of the hard work seems to have paid off! The Alabama Bar-B-Q Battle was a month long contest that ended on August 31st and Rusty’s Bar-B-Q was crowned the winner for the Mom & Pop category!

According to the Birmingham Business Journal, (and Yellow Hammer News, and AL.com) over 1 million votes were cast during the competition.  We are honored to receive such high recognition. Thank you to all of our awesome family, friends, and customers for voting more than 28,000 times! Most importantly, thank you to our wonderful crew for everything that they do on a daily basis to make this The Best Mom & Pop Bar-B-Q Restaurant in the State of Alabama!


Iron Bowl Today

It’s possible that there are people already in your house, as excited as if it were already Christmas. It’s the last Saturday in November, here in Alabama, and it’s time for the Iron Bowl where Alabama and Auburn play for the state’s football bragging rights.

It’s probably bigger than a conference championship or a national championship. Around here, it’s definitely bigger than any NFL game, including the Super Bowl. It’s the game that makes or breaks coaches’ and players’ careers.

Around here, it’s sort of like a religious holiday.

Chances are, if you’re an Alabamian, you’re going to want to watch it. This year, it comes on at 2:30 on CBS. It will be after lunch and before dinner, but that doesn’t mean your game-watching crew won’t expect to be fed. And of course, after all of that cooking you did Thursday and the shopping you did Friday, you may not want to prepare a thing for your guests or yourself.

So you can devote your full attention to the game, stop by Rusty’s to pick up some crowd-pleasing comfort food. We’ll be open from 10:30 AM -9:00 PM today. We’ll have the game on the big screen TV, so you can rest assured you won’t miss a thing.

For a crowd, we suggest pulled pork or chicken and some easy side dishes like our cole slaw or baked beans. And don’t forget dessert! Get a head start on focusing on the game by calling ahead for pickup orders.
